چکیده

We have been creating an authoring tool, the Cognitive Model SDK, which allows non-cognitive scientists and non-programmers to produce a cognitive model for model-tracing tutors [1, 2]. The SDK is in use by developers at Carnegie Learning to produce their commercial Cognitive Tutors for math. However, it has never been evaluated with regards to the strong claim that noncognitive scientists and non-programmers could, without much effort, produce useful cognitive models with it. The research presented here shows that this can be done, using a task that past researchers have used [3]. The models are evaluated across several metrics to see what characteristics of either them or their creators may distinguish better models from worse models. The goal of this work is to establish a baseline for future work examining how cognitive modeling can be opened up to a wider class of people.

Exchanging courses between different Intelligent Tutoring Systems: A generic course generation authoring tool

In recent years a great effort has been made in order to create Intelligent Tutoring Systems that get close to human teaching. Some of the handicaps of the systems already created are the impossibility of sharing the courses between different Intelligent Tutoring Systems and the difficulty of creating them. Once the intelligent tutoring system is created, creating a new course is an expensive j...

Evaluation of WebxPST: A Browser-Based Authoring Tool for Problem-Specific Tutors

Authoring tools enable the more rapid creation of intelligent tutoring systems. Such tools are essential for tutors to become more widespread. In this study we evaluate WebxPST, a browser-based authoring system that enables non-programmers to create model-tracing-like intelligent tutors. Five authors, two course instructors and three undergraduates, created 74 problems suitable for use in an un...

Example-Tracing Tutors: A New Paradigm for Intelligent Tutoring Systems

Key success criteria for an ITS authoring tool are that (1) the tool supports the creation of effective tutoring systems, (2) the tool can be used to build tutors across a wide range of application domains, (3) authoring with the tool is cost-effective, (4) the tool supports easy deployment and delivery of tutors in a variety of technical contexts, (5) tutors created with the tool are maintaina...

Lowering the Bar for Creating Model-Tracing Intelligent Tutoring Systems

The main goal of the work presented here is to allow for the broader dissemination of intelligent tutoring technology. To accomplish this goal, we have two clear objectives. First, we want to allow different types of people to author model-tracing intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) than can now do so. Second, we want to enable an author to create a tutor for software that was not initially des...

Intelligent Tutoring System Authoring Tools for Non-Programmers

An intelligent tutoring system (ITS) is a software application that tries to replicate the performance of a human tutor by supporting the theory of “learning by doing” and providing customized instruction to a student while performing a task within a problem domain such as mathematics, medical diagnosis, or even game play. ITSs have been shown to improve the performance of a student in wide ran...
